Destination wedding in the Bavarian mountains
Getting married abroad could be really a challenge: other language, different manners, no ideas about the suppliers... As a wedding planner in Garmisch-Partenkirchen I´ve had a lot of wedding couples from all over the world in the past: USA, Ireland, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, India, Finland, Australia - just to name a few. With some of them I´m still in touch and I am really happy that I´ve had the honor to be chosen to plan and coordinate so beautiful destination mountain weddings in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Mountain wedding in March
My latest task was in March for a very nice couple from the United States, a winter spring destination wedding in Bavaria. The wedding company arrived a few days before the event in Munich on a stormy, rainy and cold day but Garmisch-Partenkirchen awaited them with beautiful sunshine - perfect for some skiing days. Bride and groom had planned a side program for the week with visits in Neuschwanstein castle, a day trip to Munich and of course the Zugspitze. The welcome bags were filled not only with town maps and brochures from Garmisch-Partenkirchen but also with some specials from the region like Baumkuchen from the famous Kroenner bakery and other surprises.
After planning the wedding schedule and details over a view month I was really happy to meet "my" couple in person in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and starting my mission on Thursday for the rehearsal.
The place for the ceremony was the chapel at the George C. Marshall Center (US Base) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here the family gathered Thursday afternoon to meet the wonderful and very helpful Chaplain Don for the rehearsal at the church. The weather was great, really warm for March in the mountains, breath-taking view and best prospects for the wedding day.
All guests were given a coffee mug with a picture from the chapel and the first line of a song for the wedding ceremony - wonderful idea and everybody was really surprised. Thank you, Chaplain Don!
Later on, after a little walk through the pedestrian zone of Garmisch, the rehearsal dinner took place at the Alpenhof (restaurant at the Casino). They did a really great job that night, everyone friendly and helpful and very good food. After dinner a birthday cake for one of the guests from the Kroenner bakery was served - Sacher-Torte, very delicious.
The Alpenhof Wintergarten with mountain view was wonderful while sunset and the tables were layed with white table cloth and colorful spring flowers and candles. Really beautiful.
Next mornig was the perfect spring day for a mountain wedding in Bavaria: deep blue sky and sunshine, snowy alps and the temperature spring-like. My first job was to deliver the boutonnieres to the wedding guests at Atlas Posthotel and the bridal bouquet (Passiflori) to the bride at the Werdenfelserei were she stayed the night before the wedding. I met her during the getting ready with Jerrianne and drove afterwords to decorate the chapel at the base.
For the flowers a frozen winter color look was chosen: no bright green, more of a grey green, white and some very pale pastel colors. To the bridal bouquet we added hair jewellery that was not needed for the styling, some navy blue snow flakes which had the same color as the ribbons at the church and the dresses of the ladies.
The chapel on the base has a beautiful mountain panorama view, spring flowers in the garden, snowy alps in the back - a mountain wedding as its best.
Of course my pink suitcase was with me. It´s the wedding planners wonder suitcase, everything inside like scissors, wire, needles, decor items, all sorts of charching cables and a power bank, plaster, refresh spray... thousand of things that might be helpful during a wedding.
While coordinating a wedding I´m usually wearing my wedding planner shirt, so everyone knows who is "the one" to ask questions and get help.
For the church we had small versions of the bridal bouquet with white and green flowers and ribbons in blue which were organized by the bride to get the perfect match in color with the ladies dresses.
Every second bench in the beautiful chapel got a bouquet and two big flower arrangements beside the altar completed the church decoration.
Outside on the meadows meanwhile snowdrops and daisy bloomed...
Up to the mountains we go!After the ceremony the company left for taking wedding pictures at lake Eibsee with wedding photographer Magnus Winterholler (Gipfelliebe) and I went up the dinner venue Graseck - my mountain hideaway to start decorating the room and the tables.
I arrived in the early afternoon and the view to the mountains from the restaurant was just stunning! Outside some tables were prepared to welcome early guests and some benches with big pillows invited to stay outside in the garden in the warm spring sun and enjoying a cappuccino or a glass of champagne.
It was so impressing - my first wedding at this mountain wedding venue and I nearly have no words to discribe the feeling of that "first look". So enjoy the pictures ;)
The bride printed escord cards with the menu choice of every guest on it and they were set up at the entrance for every guest to pick one and choose a seat on his own, there was no seating plan. At this point all guests had been together for a few days and so the idea was that everybody should decide on his own who he wants to sit next to and talk.
To add the mountain / nature theme we choose wooden logs for the center pieces. The whole table decoration was kind of plain and simple: white linnen and napkins, flowers in small glasses and vases in white, grey green and some very pale pastell colors to keep the frozen winter color look. Added a lot of small glasses with simple tea light candles to have a warm effect after sun down.
The restaurant at Graseck was a perfect match: mountain panorama view, a color scheme with anthrazit and grey, materials wood and stone and very cose grey chairs and benches.
During the sundown a lot of pictures were taken outside in the garden in front of the Grasecks restaurant - it was an amazing spring night in the mountains. By the way, even a destination wedding at Graseck hotel would be possible but the couple decided to have only the dinner here to give the guests the chance to walk to downtown Garmisch-Partenkirchen everytime they like. To Graseck you have to go by cable car, it is located high above Garmisch-Partenkirchen, very quiet in the middle of the mountains. Even perfect for a honeymoon...
The food for the wedding dinner was delicious. During the champagne reception a flying buffet with finger food took place, followed by a four course menu with soup, starter, fish or meat for the main dish and chocolate mousse for dessert.
The wedding cake was made once more by Kroenner bakery in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was plain white with some special pattern and the same flowers like in the decoration. There were various fillings, mixed berries and currants and one with Mascarpone and pistaccio which is the favorite ice cream flavor of the groom. The top was a special for the bride, dairy free and with currant (Johannisbeer) flavor. The bride said she does not know how they made it taste so fantastic - compliment to the bakery!
After cutting the cake and having some coffee the company left Graseck and headed out to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bungalow7 for the party.
The groom had organized a band called "cats in the corner" and just before the party arrived Dany, the owner of Bungalow7, played a few songs himself together with the band.
At this point I needed some "pink stuff" - wedding planners life! - and ordered my favorite drink, cherry blossom tonic, to get in the mood for my last job that night: giving the blue bracelets to every guest, showing the town and date of the wedding. The bracelets were wedding favors saying "drinks for free" at the bar and were at the same time a memory gift for each guest from the couple.
So my job was done for the day and I left while the party started. Next morning I collected all my items again like steamer from the hotel, decoration from the Graseck and chapel and and and...
But the most important thing is that the newly weds were happy and left for a hopefully wonderful honeymoon trip with fantastic memories to an amazing destination wedding in Garmisch, Bavaria. Thank you for trusting me and choosing me as your wedding planner in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and all best wishes!
